Passion For Vinyl

Brazilian superstar Ed Motta came to Holland to buy an apartment, but spent all his money on vinyl instead. When a young Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth discovered a scratch on his recently bought Bathory LP he demolished his bedroom. It’s Atlantic’s CEO Craig Kallman mission to own all relevant albums on vinyl. He has 750.000 already.

That’s what vinyl does with music lovers.

In Passion For Vinyl a wide selection of DJ’s, musicians, label owners, designers, record dealers, collectors and engineers like Henry Rollins, Bernie Grundman, Hans Pokora, Chris Ellis, Steffi, Mala, Vaughan Oliver, Lee Dorrian, Jacco Gardner, John Dyer Baizley and many others share their unconditional love for vinyl. They muse about the first record that changed their lives, talk about their prized collectibles and explain why they were determined to keep vinyl alive. Passion for Vinyl also tells the history of Record Industry, the Dutch factory that has been pressing vinyl since the 1950’s.

This book is a tribute to vinyl, a format that is making a spectacular comeback recently, although for many music lovers it never really disappeared.

Passion For Vinyl is written by Dutch author, music journalist and incurable vinyl fanatic Robert Haagsma. With an introduction by American vinyl guru Michael Fremer.

MH20 - Black Stars EP

Black Stars E.P., MH20

Returning to Molecule for a second release (previously ‘The Deep Beauty’ caused a ripple in the underground progressive scene) MH20 offers up two very different tracks. Heading the charge is the beautiful and mysterious ‘Black Stars’, build around a warm FM pad and subliminal vocal edits, it is proper eyes-closed heads-down deep house music. On the flip is ‘Omnia Circa Nos’, with a French deep house flavor, groovy Rhodes and synth stabs ride a neat chord progression with some classic percussion elements which will raise a smile on quality late night house floors. Smooth.

A Meeting..

On one lovely summers day
Beside the river the animals lay
There was a mouse, her cheeks so bright
For she had seen her dazzling knight
His tall body stretched to the skies
Some say they knew him as a fella named ....
But on this very day, butterflies arose
Shy as can be, the mouse lay snug by his side
This fellow, a giraffe of some sort
He thought, my my why is she so short ?
Nevertheless he admired her so
For they were both smitten...

Bobina & Vigel - Rave One

Black Hole Recordings’s avatar@blackholerec - Magik Muzik 1085-0

With ‘Rave One’ you can definitely rave on. Bobina and Vigel release this thumping progressive house track on Magik Muzik.

For the last 9 years, Bobina has been at the forefront of Russia’s electronic dance breakout. His DJ adventures have taken him around the planet numerous times, playing tent-pole events including Global Gatherings, Gatecrasher Summer Soundsystem, Trance Energy, and the Winter Music Conference. Spinning close to 100 block-rock sets every year, it has seen DJ Mag rank and re-rank Bobina as one of the 50 biggest spinners in the world for the last 4 years running. On the production front he has released numerous singles and 4 critically acclaimed artist albums, all of which prompted Ferry Corsten to call Bobina “one of the most talented music producers ever to come out of Russia”. Through his World Club Music label operations, Bobina’s also played a major catalysing role in the careers of Armin van Buuren, Tiësto & Above & Beyond inside the Federation & ex. USSR countries, releasing their artist albums throughout the caucuses.

At only 20 years old Vasily Perepelitsyn, a.k.a. Vigel is already supported by Tiësto, Nicky Romero, Antoine Clamaran, Swanky Tunes and more. Be prepared to hear a lot more from this guy.

Music Promotion & More..

This post was inspired by music man... +douglas baptie

The first topic raises the issue of promotion. Why New Artists Should Forget About Publicity - discusses simply dismissing anything in the emails that follow the same bland structure. Receiving promos is always great for me, I love hearing new music and amazing talent, however I agree with the notion that impersonal mail outs sent to 100s of others all the time is a little tiresome to be raking through. When I receive a personal message from someone who has clearly done their research and has genuine passion for music then they have my full attention and respect. This may be a long process but in my opinion the work will pay off and you'll be able to build up a network and be taken seriously. For example we all get annoyed with telemarketers trying to shove a ppi claim in your face but perhaps if they did their research and took a personal touch and found people who really needed their help then they wouldn't get hung up on all the time.. But then I'm going back to my previous discussion on genuine people in the music industry - The Growth Of Music. Even Jon Richardson said "Why is nobody reporting the fact that music is dead?" - in reference to Miley Cyrus.. but really thinking on an international scale gives me a headache! My advice is keep away from the fakeness and stay true to what you love doing.

Do what you love; with all your heart may I add. I would love to be able to do a really wicked mix or create an absolute banger or two, but I don't because I know I just don't have the skills. There are far too many no name "DJ's" who just think oooh cool I'll jump on my laptop and overuse that fade in/out feature with the all the latest hyped up chart pop nonsense and now I'm a good dj! No. My respect goes to those who have been working hard in the music scene and is passionate about their work in music. Always learning and always feeling good about what they do. Not for the money or image, but for themselves and their passion for music.

Mia Dora - You In The Future

MadTech Records’s avatar@madtechrecords - KCMTDL017

Hot off the back of a single on Moda Black, and a remix of Romanthony on Glasgow Underground. British duo Mia Dora, drop ‘You In The Future’ via Kerri Chandler’s MadTech imprint this November.

Brit duo Mia Dora, have been making quite the names for themselves since stepping onto the scene in 2010, earning their initial wave of support off the back of remixing Roots Manuva’s, ‘Get To Get’ for Big Dada, which was picked up by Radio 1 aficionado’s Giles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and Rob Da Bank, a striking indication of the pairs undeniable talent. Fast forward two years and the duo have been snapped up for Jaymo & Andy George’s Moda imprint, and have firmed up their name as one of the hottest acts of 2013 having been enlisted to rework Romanthony, Walker & Royce and Grum.

Title track ‘You In The Future’ kicks things off, seeing the duo embrace a rawer, more upfront focus in comparison to previous singles. Smoothly shuffled drums lead the way, while cosseting Rhodes, a bumpy, sub-driven bass-line and a classic organ hook build the melodic movement. Things intricately evolve throughout the tracks seven-minute duration, with baroque changes in the structure, and additional elements such as a hypnotic acid line, keeping things intriguing and evolving dynamically as the record blooms.

Following is ‘After The Dog’, the duo again opt for a rough and rugged feel with the drums, while an insistent rounded sub bass drives the groove, and consistently varied classic chord stabs fuel its energy levels. Drawn out reversed sweeps then build tension alongside sporadic percussive rolls, to create a profound impact when reverting back to the sturdy foundations. To close the release Mia Dora offer up an ‘Extended Edit’ of ‘You In The Future’, doing exactly as it says on the tin and drawing out the infectious groove for extended mixing pleasure.

Shvona Lavette - Holding On

Today, triple threat singer/songwriter/actress Shvona Lavette who is signed to the same management company as Snoop Dogg, Macy Gray and more, releases her new single "Holding On" from her debut full album It Was Fun While You Lasted, which chronicles a fading relationship. The album, slated for a January 2014 release, speaks to the classic tale of "Should I stay or should I go" and regaining female independence after a break-up. With its lush vocals and smooth guitar licks, "Holding On" is sure to entertain alternative R&B connoisseurs.

About Shvona Lavette:
After the release of two EPs, New York native Shvona Lavette plans to release her first full album late January 2014 entitled It Was Fun While You Lasted.

It Was Fun While You Lasted, takes you on an alternative R&B ride of upbeat throwback tracks and melancholy indie slow-tempo tracks. Shvona collaborated with Justin Hori, (producer, musician and vocalist), making It Was Fun While You Lasted her most marketable project yet.  "Holding On," the first single off of It Was Fun While You Lasted, documents the vicious circle of a expired relationship.

Shvona has recently launched an organic beauty, fitness & health video blog (in the nascent stages) called The PinkSeed. This platform serves as the perfect outlet for her to share her knowledge and expertise, given her identity and affinity for natural and organic beauty and health.

Sean Tyas & Noah Neiman with Fisher - Lose My Logic

Black Hole Recordings’s avatar@blackholerec - Black Hole 601-0

What can be expected when a hot up-&-comer and a trance titan are paired with the heavenly vocals of one of the most adored singers in trance and progressive ? The answer is 'unpredictable.'

In less than stereotypical fashion, "Lose My Logic" combines the talents of Sean Tyas, Noah Neiman, and Fisher into an unprecedented musical expedition. Like any other Sean Tyas record, this tune begins with a bang, yet incorporates a bassline not typical of his usual style. A touch of rage is added when electro-trance up-&-comer Noah Neiman enters the picture, while the sensual vocals of Fisher transcends listeners to a different kind of state of trance.

"Lose My Logic" marks Tyas' debut on Black Hole Recordings, and the return to prominence of singer/songwriter, Fisher. While Noah Neiman is known for several trance top 10 hits, such as "They Have Laser Eyes [Lange Recordings]," this release proves a new chapter for all three acts has just begun.

To call this record a "banger" would be typical hype. The proof lies within itself; get ready to lose your logic November 4th!

N&R Project - You Are EP

promo packshotNext up on Touchstone is this classy 3 track E.P from Ukranian / Russian production duo N&R Project aka Sergey Babich & Alexander Kocketkov who’s love of beautiful & melodic trance music, has been demonstrated by previous releases on Silent Shore, Only One & Promind. Lead track here is ‘You Are’, opening with muted chords and washes of dreamy sequencer lines. An ethereal vocal refrain and goose-bump inducing piano lead at the break are what this track is all about, a real eyes-closed moment for blissed out dance floors. ‘Romantic’ is a similar flavor but less for the dancefloor than ‘You Are’, more in-car listening, and the 3rd offering here with Unknown Poem is pure atmospheric ambient mood music. Bliss.

Mr Sam - Readyo

Black Hole Recordings’s avatarIt might have been a while, but Mr. Sam is back with a great new release on the Appia Music label. He delivered a fierce techno track with the original mix of ‘Readyo’. Max Tiger transformed the track into two stable electro house mixes, one of which is a dirty remix. The final thumping electro house track is courtesy of DJ Furax.

Since 1995 Mr. Sam has been DJ-ing in many French and Belgian clubs and on various events, pioneering his own musical style, which is varied and eclectic, growing him a solid reputation. Sam released various singles and EP’s through the years and after singing with Black Hole Recordings, his career catapulted and he saw himself performing on Europe’s finest festivals and events, such as Mysteryland, Tomorrowland, Matrixx and Powerzone as well as events in East Asia and the Middle East. Not just being satisfied with simply DJ-ing, Sam also performs live sets with production buddy Dimitri Andreas under their Mojado guise
With this new single, a new album coming up and many more releases to come, Mr. Sam is definitely back.
